I slept until 9 this morning, and then
cattitude and I had a very lazy morning (well, I did bake some apple cakelings). I'd been planning to run some errands, including a trip to an optician, but he convinced me that it was a good day to go to the zoo.
We headed out around 12:30, and grabbed a quick lunch, then got on the bus. I had my eyeglass prescription with me, on the theory that I could go downtown after the zoo, but I realized while looking at cranes that (a) I was getting tired and (b) wearing myself out the day before leaving for Minicon wouldn't be a good idea. So we stopped for tea and coffee, then went and looked at emus on our way out. The emus were running in twos and threes, and I could hear their feathers rustling as they passed us.
The tiger exhibit was fun, but very crowded--it's a school vacation week, but today isn't a major part of either package of relevant religious holidays, so there were more people at the zoo than on a random April Thursday, even a sunny one. We got a good long look at two tigers, though, one of which walked around while the other lay with its head up, as if waiting to see if the first tiger would do anything interesting.
Mostly, though, we did birds: cranes, a pair nesting and another seeming on the verge of dancing; red-wing blackbirds; the emus; pelicans; a cormorant; a wood duck. We also enjoyed what smelled and looked like a variety of honeysuckle, though I don't expect honeysuckle in April; I saw my first dandelion of the year, and on the way home Cattitude saw his first violets.
By the time we left the zoo it was raining, and I was underdressed (I hadn't been when we set out), so I was glad to have already decided not to go running around afterwards.
