redbird: closeup of me drinking tea, in a friend's kitchen (Default)

[livejournal.com profile] cattitude and I each woke around 1 a.m. overnight. He said "Mars" and pointed, and I looked. Yes, that's Mars.

Then he went and got the binoculars. No visible difference, alas: these are birding binoculars, and fine for that but not enough to bring Mars in.

I think there's a small telescope somewhere in the back of a closet, but it's been sitting in its box since the 1980s, and I don't think I'm going to dig it out and remember what to do in the next couple of days.

(One of the local papers had a nice image of the planet, and the word CLOSEUP, as its front-page headline yesterday. Sometimes you know it's August.)

redbird: a bit of fractal (mandelbrot)

I seem to have shut down as soon as [livejournal.com profile] cattitude went out this afternoon. I'd had vague thoughts of writing and/or contemplation, being actually alone for the first time in several days (airports and subways don't count for this purpose).

So I dug out the envelope Randy Byers sent me ages ago, and have read two issues of Joie de Vivre and concluded that Floss and Chunga call for more brain than I currently have (they're thicker, at the least, even if not more difficult on a page-by-page basis).

Edit: Lacking anything creative, I decided to be useful, and have done some dishes.

Okay, I give in. I set up an AIM userid ages ago, and did nothing with it. I'm trying to create a better one, but for the moment I'm reachable, if I think to turn it on, at rosviclny.
