I got my teeth cleaned yesterday.
It turns out I hadn't been to the dentist since April of 2001. He wasn't happy. We discussed X-rays, and decided to skip them because I don't have insurance or a job right now. (I do have health insurance, but it doesn't cover dentistry--that would have been an extra $60/month, and I doubted I'd spend more than $720 on dental stuff in a year.)
He cleaned my teeth, with that annoying vibrating wire sort of thing [1]. Maybe because it had been 16 months, it hurt a bit more, and I wound up rinsing longer to get all the blood out of my mouth.
So, okay, clean teeth, and $100 later I was done. He wants me to get an electric toothbrush, and to see me again in 4 months. For X-rays and all.
The rest of the afternoon was fine, with Mom and my Aunt Lea, and then Mom and Andy and I went to dinner. I picked up a piece of pita bread and bit into it. And my teeth hurt. I ate dinner anyway, but a bit carefully. No more pita. Zucchini pancake, but someone else can have the calamari. Lamb chops, yes. Rice, yes. Grilled zucchini, yes. Grilled carrot, no. Creme caramel for dessert, not because it's my favorite but because it's soft.
[1] My standard answer to whether tattooing hurts is "yes, but it's not as bad as getting your teeth cleaned." Which is not to say that it's a picnic, just that it's bearable. When I told D. that, it confirmed her intention to never get a tattoo.
