"There's a mourning dove nesting on the octopus."--[livejournal.com profile] cattitude
*We were on our way in to the Prospect Park Zoo [1]. The entry path is decorated with sculptures of animals, including an impressive snake-eating-a-frog, all done in a sort of metal scaffolding with lots of open space, so the plantings grow into the art. The mourning dove had found a flat platform at the center of the octopus sculpture, and was sitting calmly on a nest.

[1] This is the Brooklyn zoo run by the Wildlife Conservation Society, the people who also run the Bronx Zoo, the Central Park Zoo, the Queens Zoo, and the Coney Island Aquarium. The mayor wants to close it to save money. It's relatively small, meaning you can see the whole thing in a couple of hours. They have meerkats, wallabies, delightful red pandas, bold chipmunks, sea lions [2], some fine yellow weaverbirds, and great big frogs and turtles. And a bunch of other animals. The capybara is probably the largest by mass, a crane the tallest. For big animals, you can go to the Bronx, or Queens [3] for bison.

[2] Three of the four zoos have sea lion pools.

[3] If we manage to keep the Queens Zoo open. Today's paper looked hopeful. Besides, how do you fire a disabled bald eagle? (Prospect Park has one, I think Queens has two.) [4]

[4] All these footnotes may be evidence that the cat is right and I should go to bed.[5]

[5] And if they aren't, the number of times I've edited this to tinker with layout and punctuation probably is.
