Well, the writing project may not be dead. Rafiq answered my email with an apology for not getting back to me sooner, and the statement that he should know for sure by Tuesday. I assured him that I'm still interested.
Meanwhile, an Israeli named Shay Rosenzweig wrote to ask if I had any cousins in Israel--he's looking for relatives for reasons vaguely to do with his father. I wrote back and said that my Israeli cousins aren't on the Rosenzweig side of my family, and telling him about when my grandfather Rosenzweig had come to the US. He sent me a note saying
"Thanks for your reply.
I only have 100,345 Rosenzweig left to check.. :)"
