I wrote a few hundred words this morning, and played Scrabble with
cattitude, before going off for a checkup. The nurse asked my weight, and I told her I had no idea, so we went over to their scale. She got a number in kilograms, and said "multiply by 2.2." My response was "I could do that in my head, but it would be a pain"--and then I started mumbling numbers out loud, and gave her the answer before we got back to the examining room (the scale was down the hall). Double the number--child's play--then slide the decimal and add the two numbers. She thanked me and wrote down the answer in pounds. All is well, generally, which is always a good thing to hear from a doctor.
Then I went down to the gym, on a route that involved a stroll down Lexington Avenue, where I picked up the business card of a fancy deli that also sharpens knives.
It was a good workout. I used to wonder how anyone could spend two hours at the gym This time, I barely managed in that time, and would have done at least one more exercise if I hadn't been headed elsewhere.
Hip adduction, 105 pounds, 3 sets of 15, but I didn't quite bring the things together on the last two reps of the third set. Hip abduction, 90 pounds, 15, 13, 13 (or maybe 12--I got distracted by jotting down a novel note).
Cardio, 33 minutes.
Bench press, 50 pounds, 13, 12, 8; 45 pounds, 11
Seated leg curl, 70 pounds, 3 sets of 15--though I didn't get the weight all the way down/back on most of the reps in the third set.
Adjustable row, 100 pounds, 3 sets of 15.
Crunches and arches, alternating sets, 3 sets of 15 each. I think it's progress that I've now gotten to thinking "I'm not saying 'I hate crunches'" instead of muttering "I hate crunches." I finished witha few reps of cat-and-camel and a little of the usual yoga tree thing.
Triceps pulldowns, 35 pounds, 3 sets of 15.
Leg extensions, one leg at a time, 10 pounds, 3 sets of ten on each leg.
Biceps curls, 30 pound bar, 3 sets of 15. The wandering trainer who got me back on course with the triceps things nodded when I was doing that, in a "you've got it right" sort of way.
One set of those odd wrist curls with two-pound weights (I couldn't find the one-pounders).
Finished with stretches, then a quick shower and off to...
There was a Nanowrimo social at a place down on Gansevoort Street, Florent--I had a little trouble finding it,but when I got there, I said "Nanowrimo?" to the knot of people waiting outside, they said yes, we chatted a little, and then went in. It was fun talking to some fellow lunatics, but a comfy party of six turned into an unwieldy party of 14 or maybe 16, including one person who told us he had hit 50,000 twenty minutes earlier. I had a nice lemon tart, some nice carrot soup, and a thoroughly unimpressive roast chicken. Then I came home, with the hope of writing more, which I may now go do--or at least transcribe from my notebook and newspaper.
