I just called the nice people at TIAA-CREF to take some money out of the mutual fund. I spoke with a nice, professional-sounding person who gave me her full name without being pushed, and pronounced mine correctly. After I explained what I wanted and she put it through, she gave me a 14-digit confirmation number. Enough to give everyone on the planet hundreds of transactions.
Then she told me how long it would take, gave me her name again, and said that her extension was "the last five digits of the confirmation number." Ah, "So this is only your millionth transaction, not your ten billionth." They do keep their staff busy.
