I seem to have lost my gym membership card.

This is annoying--it means I have to call and find out what to do, and whether they'll let me in to work out tomorrow without it.

But it's also weird. I'm still getting used to recognizing myself as the person who says things like "whether they'll let me into the gym" instead of trying to find ways to stay away from gym class.

But it's been 20 years, and this is Not The Same Gym. This is a place where I don't have to be on a team, let alone be picked for one, and where the staff actually want to teach me things.

The other difference is that, this time, gym is an elective. Nobody has to take it, so anyone who signs up is on the same side: nobody is hiding in the corners, bringing in forged excuses, or the like. It's like the time I was teaching myself some very rudimentary French, by working with a phrasebook while riding the subway. I got conversations and encouragement from complete strangers: you're doing something cool, tell me about it, what's up, good for you!
