I’d been trying to take things a bit easy, on the theory that I am still getting over a nasty cold, and was more worn out than I expected by Saturday’s workout. So, back to no more than three gym exercises at a time, after taking a short break from the fitness room.

After the workout, I came back, had tea, and spent some time alphabetizing books. This is a slow process, because in order to move, say, the Octavia Butler to its alphabetical place, I have to find room for whatever was on that shelf beforehand. It’s only feasible at all because we bought one more bookcase, which gives us a little extra space that I can use for a staging area.

Having gotten to the end of the B’s, I decided that I needed to get out of the apartment if I was going to take a break from carrying books around, which was definitely feeling like exercise. I had a library book on hold, and [Bad username or site: “cattitude” @ “livejournal.com”] had told me about some forsythia he’d seen from the shuttle bus yesterday. I am fond of forsythia, and there aren’t a lot of them planted around here. I’d seen ornamental cherries, a marvelous fragrant apple, and some early rhododendron, but none of those is a childhood image of spring the way the bright yellow forsythia flowers are.

At the library, I got the book I’d gone for; a vegetable cookbook that I found by browsing the many shelves of cookbooks; and another book I had put on hold but didn’t realize had come in. I put them all in my nice big backpack, and headed out in the direction of forsythias.

What I saw included a few nice rhododendrons, a patch of interesting mushrooms, dandelions, and the forsythias. Three different forsythia bushes, including one with bamboo next to it, and one tangled with a holly bush. Also a gorgeous sunny spring morning.

The plan had been to walk as far as the forsythia, then back to the library, and get a bus home. That would have been about a kilometer’s walk. Instead, the nice day tempted me; I walked past two bus stops to a pho place I like (and got slightly turned around, so add a few more blocks of hill), had lunch, and then came home, on foot. About 2.5 km (our grid blocks are 10/km, so that’s easy to figure); by the time I stopped for lunch, I was feeling the exercise in my quadriceps, and was glad that wasn’t one of the muscle groups I’d worked this morning.

(I got a nice picture of the mushrooms with my phone camera, but the forsythias are out of focus.)
