The big news:

[livejournal.com profile] cattitude and I are moving to Seattle, probably in about a month. This is job-related, in two senses: he will be working out there, and I hadn't been making much progress on finding a job here, so relocating made more sense than it otherwise would have.

It's been a frustrating few months: the possibility has been in the air for a while, and we've been expecting a definite answer within a fortnight since before Thanksgiving (for the non-Americans reading this, call it ten weeks). In the meantime, we've talked about this a lot with [personal profile] adrian_turtle and some with our parents, [personal profile] rysmiel, and a couple of Cattitude's closest friends. I've been posting less than usual because the big thing in my life was something I wasn't talking about yet. I've also been doing even less in-person socializing than usual, because I didn't want to evade "so, what's up?" and "how's the job hunt going?" (Visiting [livejournal.com profile] papersky and rysmiel the last weekend in January meant I saw not only them but a few other people, which was good.)

We're still waiting for details on logistics, and one possibility is that he will move before I do, and I will sort out some things at this end and then follow. I am also probably going to be posting questions, mostly but not only for people who know the Seattle area. It won't be "I need a bus map" (we have two books worth) so much as recommendations of doctors, veterinarians, etc.

Because it never rains but it pours:* I answered an ad about a month ago, for a math proofreader. They got back to me about ten days ago asking whether I'd like to be an editor instead (which may prove that you shouldn't customize your resume too much). I said yes, they said "first week in February," and then nothing until today. Today I learned they want me to do some training by video, and then it'll be project-based stuff for a bit. I have asked my contact to confirm that the job is entirely remote; if so, I can probably pick it up and take it with me. (I also have a brand-new valid New York State unemployment claim, but I know I can't collect benefits on that in Seattle. Federalism is complicated.)

*OK, in Seattle it drizzles.

Yay Seattle! :D Doctors, I can't help with much; I've yet to find one that I like sufficiently to recommend, but my house's collection of cats has always gone to Aurora Veterinary, and we've had nothing but good experiences with them.

Wow!

Are you both lifelong New Yorkers?

I hope the adventure will be as positive for you as my western move has been for me.

I totally get how having something big like that up in the air can be isolating.

Congrats! Maybe I'll finally get to meet you in IRL sometime (Seattle being closer to the Bay Area than NY is, and definitely to Vancouver, where I'll be for a few months :-)

Oh MY!

Best to you and yours in all your wanderings! And supercongratulations on the job-- may it be luxuriously accommodating and portable!

If I had been trying to guess which of my friends would suddenly up sticks and move to the other side of the continent I wouldn't have picked you. Good luck with the move and with building a new life in a new place. It'd be cool if you could take a distance-working job with you, rather than having to start the whole job-hunting process completely from scratch.

And I totally sympathize with the frustration and social withdrawing when there's a big thing going on you aren't talking about.

That's a big change. I hope, whatever you decide to do, it goes well.

I am also probably going to be posting questions, mostly but not only for people who know the Seattle area.

I have friends in Seattle and can direct questions to them, if you like. Let me know.

Best of luck.

I hope this is an excellent venture for you two! *cheers you on*

I know moving can be both exciting and daunting. I hope it works out for everyone concerned. I think I would enjoy living in Seattle myself, but I don't think Judy or Terri would want to live anywhere that has more winter than here in Central Florida.

Oh wow! Best of luck with that, and I hope you hate the actual process of moving less than I do.

Good thing you already have a community here. We'll be happy to see you.

What a big change.

Wow. Big change! As Kate said, it's great that you already have a community out there. But oh, so far from both Boston, Montreal, and all of the resources you've built up in New York over the years.

I can see how the last couple of months would have been frustrating, indeed. So much uncertainty and waiting.

Congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] cattitude on the job out there, and to both of you on your upcoming move.

Wow! You'll be so close now! Good luck with the move, I hope all goes smoothly.

Wow! I have great admiration! I would be terrified!

Seattle, the black hole of fanzine fandom... faneds are all drawn to it...

Best of luck on the whole thing!

Best of luck! ([livejournal.com profile] kitanzi and I just moved to the Seattle area ourselves...)

From: [identity profile] baratron.livejournal.com

Gosh! Well, I shall be sad not to see you whenever I visit New York, but happy to see you when I visit Seattle :) Good luck with it all - I can't even imagine packing up a library of books to move that far!

If you need information about doctors and the like just let me know.

I'm so glad it's settled. Good luck with everything.

Good luck with the big move.

If [livejournal.com profile] cattitude has a workplace job, as opposed to a work-from-home one, be sure to consult with the locals about current traffic patterns. Traffic is very heavy in Seattle, and getting caught in thick commutes, whether by car or bus, is something that shouldn't be done without weighing the options.

For instance, many people work at Microsoft but don't want to live in the suburban sprawl that is the residential areas near there, so they live in Seattle proper, which is denser and more urban with more of that type of amenities. But there's a big lake in between them, and getting across or around that lake is a traffic nightmare. If that's where the job is, you have to decide which price is worth paying, the commute or the neighborhood.

Good luck with the move! I hope it's as painless as possible, and that you settle in comfortably.

Wow; that's a big deal! Wishing you all the best!

SO far I'm really enjoying life in the PNW - I hope you do too!

That should be fun! Hope the logistics don't turn into too much of a hassle, too.

I am confident that this is going to bring good things. Exciting new chapter!
