The big news:
cattitude and I are moving to Seattle, probably in about a month. This is job-related, in two senses: he will be working out there, and I hadn't been making much progress on finding a job here, so relocating made more sense than it otherwise would have.
It's been a frustrating few months: the possibility has been in the air for a while, and we've been expecting a definite answer within a fortnight since before Thanksgiving (for the non-Americans reading this, call it ten weeks). In the meantime, we've talked about this a lot with
adrian_turtle and some with our parents,
rysmiel, and a couple of Cattitude's closest friends. I've been posting less than usual because the big thing in my life was something I wasn't talking about yet. I've also been doing even less in-person socializing than usual, because I didn't want to evade "so, what's up?" and "how's the job hunt going?" (Visiting
papersky and rysmiel the last weekend in January meant I saw not only them but a few other people, which was good.)
We're still waiting for details on logistics, and one possibility is that he will move before I do, and I will sort out some things at this end and then follow. I am also probably going to be posting questions, mostly but not only for people who know the Seattle area. It won't be "I need a bus map" (we have two books worth) so much as recommendations of doctors, veterinarians, etc.
Because it never rains but it pours:* I answered an ad about a month ago, for a math proofreader. They got back to me about ten days ago asking whether I'd like to be an editor instead (which may prove that you shouldn't customize your resume too much). I said yes, they said "first week in February," and then nothing until today. Today I learned they want me to do some training by video, and then it'll be project-based stuff for a bit. I have asked my contact to confirm that the job is entirely remote; if so, I can probably pick it up and take it with me. (I also have a brand-new valid New York State unemployment claim, but I know I can't collect benefits on that in Seattle. Federalism is complicated.)
*OK, in Seattle it drizzles.

Are you both lifelong New Yorkers?
I hope the adventure will be as positive for you as my western move has been for me.
I totally get how having something big like that up in the air can be isolating.

Best to you and yours in all your wanderings! And supercongratulations on the job-- may it be luxuriously accommodating and portable!

Good luck in the damp North!

And I totally sympathize with the frustration and social withdrawing when there's a big thing going on you aren't talking about.

I have friends in Seattle and can direct questions to them, if you like. Let me know.
Best of luck.

I can see how the last couple of months would have been frustrating, indeed. So much uncertainty and waiting.
Congratulations to

Seattle, the black hole of fanzine fandom... faneds are all drawn to it...
Best of luck on the whole thing!

If
For instance, many people work at Microsoft but don't want to live in the suburban sprawl that is the residential areas near there, so they live in Seattle proper, which is denser and more urban with more of that type of amenities. But there's a big lake in between them, and getting across or around that lake is a traffic nightmare. If that's where the job is, you have to decide which price is worth paying, the commute or the neighborhood.
