I've read several Anthony Price novels, but the only one that really stuck with me was Other Paths to Glory, which concerns latter-day scholars studying World War I. It's a contemporary thriller story whose plot turns on the characters' knowledge of a particular action in a WW1 battle. It's one of the Audley/Butler novels, but they are not the viewpoint characters.
