Also, think about your helping verbs. The sentence "Pesticides can also serve as pollutants in the environment" leads to some odd implications about the writer's intentions or world-view. Fine if you are Pratchett and Gaiman's Four Horsepersons of the Apocalypse, but not appropriate for most of us mortals, sans long-haired white cats and underground fortresses.
