Jon Singer and Cally Soukup identified the fruit as langsat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lansium_domesticum). I take it you missed the "Worldbuilding" panel? Jim Macdonald started it off with an extended riff on the idea of a LangSat...Language Satellite, that is.
