Self-selected

I like my social circle: I'm bi and poly, but now that I've stopped dyeing my hair, my "distinguishing characteristic" to you is that I'm sensible.

I think it's that you're interesting and smart, myself.

Would you take it wrong if I said your gym habits inspire me? (Even though I rarely look at the actual numbers, because it's not about numbers)

Bi and poly - and intelligent and well-read - are absolutely normal as far as I'm concerned. These things wouldn't work as distinguishing characteristics, because I have very few friends who aren't either bi or poly or both, and pretty much no friends who aren't intelligent. But I know a lot of people who are intelligent and hot-headed, or who are intelligent but lack common sense. So the people who give consistently good advice stand out - as do the people who write consistently interesting livejournal entries, or who have consistently stimulating ideas.
