I am getting thoroughly tired of PayPal telling me I have to change my password. Or, rather, forcing me to go through a password-retrieval-and-change rigamarole without telling me what it's doing.

This is the third time in less than two months.

I am going to try calling and talking to a human being later.

Huh, I've been using it for years and have never gotten that (well, other than phishing emails) -- I wonder what the deal is.

Part of my annoyance is that they don't want to let you talk to someone unless you claim to be having trouble (re)validating/proving you are you. There's no clear way to contact someone and say "why do you keep demanding I change my password?"

The only emails I ever get like this are the phishing ones that aren't from Paypal at all. I generally ignore them, after going directly to Paypal from another route (not the one they conveniently give you in the email) and checking that my information is still correct and my password still works. Paypal will NEVER ask for your account information in an email. If you are getting emails requesting this, they are fake.

Where is PayPal telling you you have to change your password? Is this when you're actually logging in on a website that uses PayPal and trying to use it?

Because if you're getting e-mails that say they're from PayPal that say "please verify your account information by clicking this link," they're fake. I get them and I've never touched PayPal in my life.

My guess is that what's happening is that someone's using a dictionary program trying to randomly crack passwords. This has happened to me multiple times lately tool. I phoned them about it on Saturday, and the customer service rep said "your account is locked because of multiple failed attempts to log in." I said "I got this error message on the first try." She said "well that's not right. It takes 10 failed attempts before it locks your account." I said "Nope, this happened on time #1." She said "well it shows here that your account locked [two days ago.]" I said "funny, I haven't used it in about 10 days."

Just make sure that password is strong, and be grateful it does lock. If they got infinite tries, they'd be in your bank account already.

Yeah, I've had to change it four times in the last few weeks for the same reason. Way annoying. Glad to know it's not just me.

I know those phishing emails are fake. I delete them unread.

This is happening when I try to log on to the actual Paypal site in order to send someone money (in this case,

elisem).

It's good to know you can talk to a customer rep--attempts to email them about this (last time it happened) dropped me into a system that insisted on being told what I was emailing about, and then feeding me to the FAQ, with no option for "no, I want to send you email."

I haven't used PayPal in, like, forever. The last couple of times I tried to, I got some hassle like you're describing. About my only dealings with them have been sending particularly irritating phishing attempts to spoof@paypal.com. Mostly I just toss that drek, but sometimes they hit me when I'm in the mood to do something about them.

That's happened to me, too. I haven't tracked how often or when.

I phoned because I went through the online reset process, waited 30 mintes for the reset mail to arrive, and still didn't have it. Then i tried the automated phone call process, and found that the phone number they have listed hasn't been valid in 2 years. At this point I was over it so I called. They've made phone support much more accessible since eBay bought them.
