Another friend lost
I just heard from
bohemiancoast (in
anonymousclaire) that KIM Campbell has died. She had cancer, and was in a hospice: the news shouldn't have surprised me as much as it did.
I never got to know KIM well: but at the Leeds Corflu, when I was planning to travel around a bit and wanted to go spend a bit of time in York with Pam Wells (who was living in a one-room student flat), KIM came across the bar to greet me with "Of course you can stay with me" while I was trying to get up my courage to ask a complete stranger for crash space. She was good company for dinner and the evening, as well as a friendly host.

Relationships and circumstances gave Kim and I the opportunity to become friends. I'm very grateful we shared enough common sensibilities to pursue that opportunity, starting, really, with that dinner in York. Yes, we met at the Leeds Corflu, but that was a convention hello, getting just the beginnings of a sense of each other. There weren't nearly enough years to follow, but I will long treasure memories of soaking in the hot tub at the San Diego SMOFcon, of traveling a dozen hours to spend a little over one with her when I was over for plokta.con

Her presence at Torcon was a gift, one I'm glad she enjoyed, one during which I'm glad I was able to contribute small measures of comfort now and then.
In too little over five years, we saw each other in three countries. We spent a day at Kennedy Space Center; we exchanged presents and amusements; we laughed together, we worried together. We didn't write often, but, down at the core, we were comfortable, and we were there for each other in hard times.
I'm mentally listening to Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" as I type. No one performer, memories of various versions layered on top of each other, just as memories of Kim are.

And yes, I'd read that she had cancer, but it's still a shock.
May she rest in peace.
