turned down for freelance gig

I heard back from the people I did the copy editing test for. They liked my actual edits, but want someone who "digs in more" to the formatting and templates. My contact said they'll keep me in mind if they need someone who is a good copy editor but without that focus.

Given that I had looked at the layout/templates, and made only a couple of changes, if that's what they want, they should probably be looking elsewhere.

Oh, that is disappointing.

My only question is Did they make it clear that those items were fair game? Because, to me, as a copy editor it's not my role to worry about your templates. I would likely make note of where formatting in one place didn't follow the formatting as presented elsewhere in the document but I am not going to try and improve them.

And if they didn't make it clear (that they really want a docunentation specialist and not a copy editor) then I say you dodged a bullet because that lack of communication would likely show up elsewhere.

Agreed.

I had the same question--to me "included" doesn't sound like "one of the main requirements." I'm sorry it wasn't a good fit.

Boo! IMHO, this is not a wise decision – edits are very personal things, and while they might wish for a unicorn who does everything exactly the way they want it, chances are they'll get one or the other, and it's so much easier to tell a CE whose substantial edits you like to please do more formatting than the other way round.
