Meanwhile, I idly contemplate buying some mums to stick into the ground in front of our building, and wonder whether they'd be left alone. Or maybe crocus and daffodil bulbs, for spring.

More likely neither, at least not tomorrow: I have other things to do, things I don't need to worry about someone else undoing. (Much of it involves not-very-interesting phone calls, to banks and insole manufacturers and maybe my dentist.)

Left alone by squirrels, people, or dogs?

I hear that daffodil bulbs don't smell tempting. And that you can protect crocus bulbs by including bone meal in the holes and planting daffodils around them.

For people and dogs, I have no idea.
