Number of people killed last year retrieving change from a vending machine: four. Number of people killed by a wolf attack: zero.—Jon Carroll, tucked in at the end of a column on sabermetrics, and home run statistics. Also, "Here's the weird part: It is perfectly possible that Barry Bonds cheated but that the cheating had nothing to do with the records."

[I should be packing for Wiscon, or putting more musicals on the iPod, or maybe calling [livejournal.com profile] porcinea's father in law. Instead, this.]

On Barry Bonds: yes, exactly. People behave as though taking every steroid in the world could make someone into Barry Bonds. It couldn't. [livejournal.com profile] timprov has often said, "No amount of drugs in the world today could make me hit like Barry Bonds." A lot of what makes Barry Bonds fun to watch -- if he's fun to watch at all -- is how, when he's "on," he can take just about any pitch and just send it sailing. Steroids will not teach that kind of timing and direction.

The first one's a West Wing quote (first season), so I think it's properly a Sorkin quote.
