Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] mactavish, this is a great tit (Parus major L.).

Pardon me if this is a Dumb Question (tm), but is the black-capped chickadee a type of tit? Because I noticed the genus, and if I remember correctly, it's the same (Parus atricapillus is what my brain says, which may or may not be correct). And... they kinda look similar. Any chance?

I think I got that impression from Petersen's field guides. I tried to memorize a bunch of birds commonly seen on and around the Appalchian Trail for my hike. This site (http://www.itis.usda.gov/servlet/SingleRpt/SingleRpt?search_topic=TSN&search_value=178699) suggests that they are titmice... but then again, as you said--YOAMV. And, of course, what I am calling black-capped chickadees may not actually be such. In fact, I saw some this morning that I would call BCC, and they looked very different from what I considered BCC in NYC. There was also a beautiful cardinal singing in the bush next to my front door that made me think of you. :)
