job hunt oddities

I picked up the Sunday NY Times; the want ad section was thin, and I circled only a couple of possibilities.

This morning, I was doing the standard "research the company" thing. The idea is to figure out who to address your letter and resume to, and maybe be able to say why this company should hire you.

One of the ads I'd circled was from Crescent Publishing. They don't seem to have a Web site under that name. What did turn up--all praise to Google!--was stories about fraudulent credit card charges, ranging from unauthorized charges to someone with no access to a computer being charged for visiting a porn site.

Okay, that's someplace I don't want to work, and maybe a stamp saved.

Crescent?

They were the parent company for Masquerade Books, if memory serves. (I dealt with an editor there, who also did PR for Masquerade. Masquerade went out of business without informing anyone, including their authors and editors. Not that I mind this.... ahem.)
