King Sihanouk is on our side

The Netherlands, Ontario, San Francisco....and Cambodia? Sihanouk is a constitutional monarch, so it's not clear how much practical effect this announcement will have.

The text is here, if you're up to reading handwritten French.

Thanks so much for that link, [livejournal.com profile] redbird. That's really most adorable. I'd heard of Sihanouk's journal but never actually seen it. But bless!

Oh, thank you for posting that! I'll be picking through it and transcribing it (mostly for the practice) throughout the day, if there isn't a transcription found sooner. (I suspect there will be long before I'm done!

YAY!

Of our two families at school with same-sex parents, one of them adopted their kids from Cambodia. I find myself itching to tell them, if they don't know already.

Possibly Chicago -- the county clerk has expressed interest in issuing marriage licenses if a San Francisco-like publicity splash can be arranged, and the mayor has come out in favor.

The mayor of Salt Lake City favors gay marriage, which surprised me a bit. So has the mayor of Plattsburgh, NY, who's a gay Republican. See

Does someone have a password to give for that page? I don't really want to give the Washington Post all the demo data that they ask for.

Going through a link on Google News, rather than directly to the Washington Post, doesn't require a subscription. However,
that story now requires a bit of digging on Google News. So here's what I excerpted from it -- and URLs to local stories:

Mayors in Salt Lake City and Plattsburgh, N.Y., also have expressed support for same-sex marriage....In Salt Lake City, Mayor Ross C. "Rocky" Anderson (D), who is an honorary board member of the pro-gay-marriage group Freedom to Marry, said San Francisco's efforts would allow more people to see the benefits of allowing gays to marry.

Plattsburgh Mayor Daniel Stewart, who is gay, said he recognizes that his support for same-sex marriage puts him at odds with many of his fellow Republicans. "But, as a gay man, I have to fight for equality," he told the Press-Republican of Plattsburgh.

Thanks for those links.

It's...it's amazing, seeing this sort public announcement in the face of people complaining about "activist judges".
