Apple NY543 (tentative)

This was labeled as being descended from and similar to Gala; I like Galas so decided to give it a try. So we bought two, along with some Paula Reds and, at the other end of the block, some macouns.

The one I just bit into was bland and not at all juicy. I expected that I might like these and [livejournal.com profile] cattitude probably wouldn't. If we hadn't just tried and been disappointed by one of this year's macouns, I would probably give up on this variety. As is, I'm thinking it's just not a good year for apples: it's been a very weird growing season, warm early and then an odd pattern of rain and sunshine. So I may try this again next year, if they turn up again.

NY543 are smaller and flatter than a Gala, sort of Macintosh-shaped (the equatorial diameter is noticeably greater than the height), and the skin is part red and part yellow. (If the sign mentioned another ancestor, I don't remember it.)
