I also walked up Broadway from 33rd to 44th Street to get them, and there appears to be a great pent-up demand to sit in little chairs in what looks like the middle of the street, is currently a sort of set-aside area, and will be part of a several-block-long pedestrian mall starting next week.

And I am indeed puzzled by all the people sitting out there with drinks, though I suspect they're the same ones who sit on morning rush hour trains with cups of coffee.
