Planned DW price increase

denise has announced that, after 15 years, they will be raising prices for paid Dreamwidth time, rename tokens, etc.

They haven't figured out what the new prices will be, but the amount will be based on catching up with 15 years' inflation, to keep the site self-sustaining. They don't know yet when this will happen, but it will be in 2025, and they'll give people at least one month's notice.

Free accounts will continue to exist, with the same features they have now. Also, the site is having the usual December sale, of a 10% bonus on any points bought this month.

Dreamwidth points to give away

One of the things I like about Dreamwidth is that it's completely ad-free and always has been. You can buy paid time, which lets you do things like posting by email (which I use on occasion) and create polls, and gives you more icon slots and more tags.

In order to support the site, I'm giving away some free time. If you're interested, comment below. I'm screening comments, and reserve the right to choose a recipient randomly, but if there's something in particular you would do with the paid account time, please tell me.

I'm doing this because I have a "seed" account, which doesn't expire, so I don't need to/can't buy more time for this journal, and I want to support the site.

She reposted, and I'm linking to it, because the apparent imminent collapse of Twitter means some people will be looking for other social media sites. DW is not Twitter (which is part of why I like it here, and rarely post(ed) there), but scratches some of the same itch.

An icon meme

I got this via miss_s_b, who asked about three of my userpics. As written, it's 'Reply to this post with "Oh, sod it, go on then" and I will pick three of your icons for you to talk about in your own journal; please then keep the meme going by making this offer on your post.' That's not really my dialect, so ask in whatever terms feel right to you.

She gave me these:

"When speeded up, the sound trees make is vroom" is a quote from Good Omens, by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman." I haven't used this in a while, maybe because I'm not that fond of palms, but I was thinking sort of general enthusiasm.

Cardinals, on the other hand, are close to my heart (hence the username). This photo is an example of mosaicism: half the bird's body is genetically female (ZW) and half is genetically male (ZZ). I use this occasionally for stuff about gender, and just as an example of the world being full of wondrous things. I found the photo on a blog post someone pointed to.

This is a closeup photo of a ripe apricot, taken by me. I wanted something to use specifically for food posts; in retrospect an apple might have been better.

This may be my goodbye to Livejournal

The owners of LJ have changed their terms of service again, and from what I can see I am not happy (the things I can see include that there is no official/binding version of the TOS in a language I can read, only in Russian), and that users aren't supposed to post anything that would count as either political or pornographic by Russian law.

I suspect that my user bio on LJ, let alone some of my entries, qualifies as one or the other, since I'm openly bisexual.

They're also changing where they put advertising, and I think claiming greater rights to republish material. (I've been sort-of reading about this along with dealing with other things, including calling the governor's office about a bill that I think Putin would dislike.)

I'm not deleting anything immediately, in part because I assume SUP already have it all backed up on a server in Russia, but this may be the last cross-posted entry; in any case, anything friends-only/filtered is likely to be Dreamwidth-only from now on.

If you're on my friendslist on LJ, please tell me your DW username so I can add you here.

ETA: The cross-post failed, and my current attempt to make a similar post directly over there, and update my profile, failed; the status page says LJ is undergoing "planned" maintenance right now.

I hadn't realized the Dreamwidth importer would import comments on existing entries; I have just asked it to do that, and will try to remember to do so at least once a month.

My current plan is to keep cross-posting a lot of things from DW to Livejournal, but probably not all the friends-locked/filtered posts. This is an attempt to balance between wanting to keep up with my friends who are only on LJ, and having something vaguely resembling information security.

Icons and possible links between different sites

I just came across a post suggesting that http://tineye.com can link icons used on different sites, e.g., Dreamwidth and Google+. Just in case, I have grabbed a different old image of me (also from 2007) as a G+ icon, and am going to use the trilobite as default for a few days here.

I bought a seed/permanent Dreamwidth account a while back, and they kindly credited me with the existing paid time I had. I believe those points are good for seven months' worth of paid account, in the form of a half-year and a single month.

If you'd like them, and don't currently have a paid Dreamwidth account, ask. (If you don't have a DW account at all but want one, you can use this to set up the account, or you could use it on an existing free account.)

Three weeks for dreamwidth

I was going to try writing a bunch of stuff for the "three weeks for dreamwidth" festival. The idea of that is to put more DW-only content up, to encourage people to read here. (Anything so tagged/dedicated isn't supposed to be crossposted, to LJ or anything else, for three weeks after it's posted on DW. Pointers are cool, of course.) Broadly speaking, I like that idea, because I want my friends to come over here and play.

In practice, I haven't been doing it, because I don't want my friends not to see what I'm writing now. In particular, I'm sharing the ongoing narrative of my life, and I want you to know that (or as much of it as interests you), and a three-week gap there wouldn't help.

It turns out (no surprise, now that I think about it) that I care more about the people than the software or specific online context. I still miss rec.arts.sf.fandom, and alt.poly is not what it was, but I am still talking to a lot of you from those places, including on LJ/DW. (Some tech or sites are just too annoying; LJ doesn't come close to that for me, despite my problems with management there.)

I have now written one (1) such post. (It's over here.) I may or may not do more, but I will point to them if so.

I just bought a year's worth of paid time at Dreamwidth, taking advantage of the discount rate (which is good until November 1st, and no, I don't know if that means ending at midnight Saturday or midnight Sunday, nor what time zone it is).

No, I'm not abandoning LiveJournal. There's still a lot more conversation on LJ than on DW. And I read and comment on other blogs, and I'm even still on Usenet.
