She mentioned the standard advice that if someone you're dating is nice to you but rude to waitresses, they're not someone to stay with.

Very true. My mom said something similar, only replacing "waitresses" with "their mother" to take the notion to the other (i.e., most specific) extreme. Me, I've developed a general distate for people who are habitually rude, period. Context (i.e., the who) matters, but not so much if the disregard is universal.
