In memoriam

Octavia Butler died yesterday. I'm going to miss her, miss her writing mostly--I'd seen her at a con or three, but I didn't actually know her.

She was an excellent writer. I couldn't always read her--most of her work is very dark, and I can't always handle that. But she was one of our best writers--whether "we" means science fiction or simply American literature.

I was sort of her "campus guide" when she came to Kenyon to speak, and I was deeply impressed by her. She'll be missed.

And, like you, I have to read some of her work in small doses because it can be quite upsetting, but it's definitely amazing stuff.
