Part of why subways feel familiar/safe is that I have that experience of navigating them successfully. I learned New York's over a couple of decades, and then I do pretty well reading maps of other subway systems. It helps that the London Underground map looks "right" because the design of the NYC subway maps of my childhood and adolescence was based on the London Underground map.
