Thanks to whoever recommended Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus. It's weird and good (some of the events in the story are on a magic/surreal borderline, but the narrative isn't).

I just listened to the audio book, and enjoyed it very much. I'd actually like to own the book now so I can flip through and re-read several parts.
