I picked up a bottle of Nantucket Orange-Mango Nectar to drink on the bus yesterday (also a cup of tea, which was acceptable but unspectacular). After drinking part of it, I read the ingredients list, out of idle curiosity (and the same motivation that led me to read cereal boxes, in the days when I had cereal in boxes on my breakfast table). At the very end, it had elderberry and chokecherry extracts, added for coloring. I was fairly sure I'd never had chokecherry before until I googled while writing this entry, and discovered it's the same wild cherry (Prunus virginiana) we had growing in my back yard when I was a teenager, which my brother was fond of and I found too sour.

Ah, well. I liked the thought of having added a new food to the list of things I've tasted. I think I was thinking of pokeweed, though, whose only value is as a dye.
