Exercising again, cautiously
I basically spent February being sick (with a nasty respiratory and ear infection), and am still not entirely recovered, but I'm feeling enough better to want to work out again.
After a month of doing very little physically, it would almost certainly be a bad idea to dive back into my usual workout routine. So, for the moment: I'm back to using the building exercise room, but the short-term policy is no more than three distinct exercises a day, even if it feels at the time as though I have the energy to keep going.
The first day of this, I did two exercises, felt tired, and stopped. The second, I did three, and was happy to stop. This morning (after deliberately skipping a day yesterday) I did three and felt like I wanted to keep going. Instead, I stopped, walked out…and then walked up the hill to the bagel shop. That felt as though it might be cheating, but it's also true that I need to get back into condition in terms of walking/cardio.
After a couple of workouts in a row where I feel as though I would like to do more than three (rather than thinking three is plenty because I'm tired), I will increase it. I haven't decided yet by how much, but it's not going to be straight from a maximum of three to doing nine or ten different things. Maybe one day of four, and if that goes smoothly the next workout could be five?
