Please, tell me some good things about Alabama. The state board of
education is driving me to distraction, and leaving me worried about the
students who are stuck with this curriculum, whoever wrote it, and
whoever selected them.

It contains Huntsville, which is a hotbed of rocket scientists and sf fans?

Um, I know some cool people from there? I wish I could extrapolate to the general from the particular.

Um, if you're driving from New Orleans to Orlando, as I've done, Alabama doesn't take up very much of your time. That's one good thing about it.

Well, my mom is from there, about half her family still lives there, a small town and an elementary school there are named after relatives of mine (maybe other bits, too), and my brother was born there.

Also, there were Southern Unionists (http://www.1stalabamacavalryusv.com/page1.asp) from North Alabama, including one of my ancestors.

I'm not sure which of my cousins went to public school and which didn't, so I can't speak much on the educational system.

One of the smartest people I've ever met was a bisexual from Birmingham who attended public school. Birmingham had a well-developed series of magnet schools at the time, of which he spoke quite highly. He doesn't redeem the entire state, though.

Also, the bare-assed statue of Vulcan in Birmingham is a delight.

Um, it conveniently rhymes with Barack Obama, so if someone wanted to write him a victory ode or similar, that would be really convenient?
